How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There are two primary treatments used to whiten teeth. In-chair appointments use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide to coat the teeth. With some whitening systems, this is followed by a special UV light treatment to activate the whitening ingredient. In-chair  treatments are usually more expensive than take home treatments, but provide a more instant result. 

Take home teeth whitening treatments are more affordable than in-chair treatments. They are applied at home and, in most cases, do not require a special whitening light to activate the chemicals. 

Central Brunswick Dental Centre utilises a range of Opalescence Teeth Whitening kits to provide teeth whitening for our patients. We utilise Opalescent Boost as our in chair whitening system and Opalescence PF and Opalescence Go for our take home whitening kits. 

Opalescence PF contains 35% Carbamide Peroxide (which is equivalent to about 11% hydrogen peroxide) whilst Opalescence Go contains 15% Hydrogen Peroxide.

  • We will make a custom made whitening tray by taking an impression and will supply the whitening solutions which generally last for a few months. Patients can stop when reaching the desired result and store the unused whitening materials in the fridge until they need to top up again.
  • We generally charge around $500 for this treatment.

  • Opalescence Go
    • Premade, pre-filled trays, eliminates the need of taking impressions.
    • 30 minutes wear time.
    • Slightly faster.
    • 10 trays per kit (10 days worth of treatment).
  • Opalescence Go may work a little faster than Opalescence PF, but not by much.
  • Patients may experience teeth sensitivity during treatment, can pause/stop treatment and alternate with sensitive toothpaste to counter the sensitivity.

  Our kits use a special whitening gel applied via a one-size-fits-all mouthguard. The gel contains a mix of potassium nitrate and fluoride and comes in a mint flavour.

  Central Brunswick Dental Centre also offers in-chair Opalescence Teeth Whitening Solutions to patients who want an instant solution to brighter, whiter teeth. Opalescence Boost is used in the clinic and will produce results in approximately one hour. Unlike other in-chair treatments, Opalescence Boost does not require hot, uncomfortable lights to activate the chemicals contained in the gel. It contains the same ingredients as the take-home kits, but a greater concentration of hydrogen peroxide.

  Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

  There are no known adverse side effects from teeth whitening aside from a numb feeling on and around the teeth. So long as care is taken to ensure gums do not come into contact with the whitening agent (in other words, so long as the mouthguard included in the kit is used), the treatment is extremely safe.
